AccessVision Wins Regional Awards

Each year, the Alliance For Community Media Central States Region salutes the best community programming with a video contest, the Philo Festival Of Media Arts Video Competition. AccessVision, the Battle Creek area's community television facility, has once again been honored for its programming with four "Philo" awards, along with nominations in two overall excellence categories.

AccessVision Production Manager Jeffery Smith was a Winner in the Channel Bumps & Station ID’s category for AccessVision’s Weather Channel ID promo. Jeff’s promo was also nominated for an overall Excellence In Cinematography award.

Volunteer producer Michael Campbell was honored with three awards total. His program “Our Voice” was a winner in the Interview/Talk Show (Non-Professional) category. Mike was also a finalist in both Entertainment (Non Professional) and Performing Arts (Non Professional) categories for his coverage of “The Historical Black History Concert Choir”. This program also earned Campbell an additional nomination for overall Excellence In Directing.

“It’s exciting for AccessVision and the Greater Battle Creek Area to receive these awards on behalf of the hundreds of volunteer producers and individuals who use AccessVision” according to AccessVision's Executive Director Dale Geminder. "This speaks highly of the quality of work done by volunteers and the AccessVision staff.”

With over 250 entries in categories including community event, original short film, public service announcement, government coverage and many more, awards were presented at a ceremony in Richmond, Indiana on October 28th.

The Philos are a recognition of excellence in non-commercial cable access programming. The awards are named after Philo T. Farnsworth, inventor of the first receiving tube for television transmissions.
